2010 Award Winner - Residential Rehabilitation

In a rare turn of events, Mark Wheeler Residential Design was a two-time winner of the Long Beach Heritage Award in 2010. The second award was also for residential rehabilitation, this time for the Meyer Residence on St. Joseph Avenue in Belmont Shore.

Our work on the Historic Bixby Estate in Virginia Country Club (the Smith/Rose Residence) was featured in this publication on historically significant buildings in Long Beach. Also featured was the Pray/Dawson Residence (the Dawson Residence), another historic icon in the Virginia Country Club area of the city.

“I can’t even imagine where we’d be without Mark’s guidance and counsel, from the earliest stages of brainstorming, all the way through project completion was nothing short of exceptional. His designs on our remodel included an addition and yet somehow our yard seemed larger after actually reducing square footage. Almost ten years after our initial project with Mark, and not a single regret about any of the choices he helped us make. Mark truly listens and designs spaces that fit the way WE live. He wants to help people love their homes, not satisfy his own vision simply, he’s the very best and we’d never take on a project without him.”

“We loved everything about our 1935 Spanish Revival home in San Diego except that it was becoming too small for our growing family. From our first meeting with Mark, it was clear that he had the same vision as we did- provide us the additional space we needed while preserving the design details, sense of history and scale of the existing house.

We could not be happier with the final product. The additional space in the new kitchen, family room and master suite he designed flows seamlessly from the old portion of the house. Details like Moorish arches and plaster beams from the existing house, which he repeated throughout the addition, tie the project together visually. Mark was available throughout the construction process as well to advise us on design questions that came up during construction. Thanks to Mark, we have the house we dreamed of and will be living in, and enjoying, for a long time.”

“Mark is a genius when it comes to home design! He doubled the living space in our 90-year-old 2 bedroom/1 bath house and created a modern, yet classic Spanish home with all the amenities one could hope for. He maintained the original character of the house while incorporating our family's lifestyle to create a warm, yet open environment and a flow that is not only functional, but architecturally period-correct. He has an eye for detail and a sense of style that comes through in his design elements. Blending the old with the new, he accomplishes the optimum results with the budget and materials available. Mark is a pleasure to workwith and was available from the beginning of the project to completion to consult with the builder, subcontractors, and myself as needed. His direction and guidance helped to make the project a success, nearly on budget and on scheduled completion in 7 months. I would highly recommend Mark as a professional residential designer. He will find the heart in your home.”
